Quotation

[Suggested translation, Marije Osnabrugge:] Tell him, answers Apelles, that it is this Man who is looking for him; with these words he took the closest brush in his hand and drew a miraculously fine line with some sort of paint on the panel. Protogenes had only just returned, or the old Woman gave him notice of the whole story. They say that the Artist had only just looked at the subtlety of this line, or he immediately understood that Apelles had come, because he believed that nobody else could produce such perfect work; then he also drew a line that was even thinner on the previous line with another paint; and when he decided to leave for a bit, then he ordered the old maid that she would show the stranger this line while simultaneously telling him that this was the man he was looking for, it happened exactly like that, Apelles came another time, But as the shame obstructed him from admitting he had been defeated, then he has cleft the line with a third type of paint, taking away the hope of any further subtlety from the other Artist. As such Protogenes admitted his defeat, and walked quickly to the port to find the stranger.
