[suggested translation, Marije Osnabrugge:] A few years ago, Abraham Bosse has written a whole book about this in Paris, which afterwards was also translated in High German and Low German; In which he explains to make the ground, how one should apply it to the Plates, drying will make it hard and black, how one will sharpen the drawing-style [ndr: burin], fix it and draw it on the Copper, in which way one should make the strong-water and pour it on the Copper, and all other necessary acts that are required for it, which he teaches in different ways, one with a hard and the other with a soft ground: Such that he is able to explain everything clearly in it, up to the construction of the printing press, based on his own experience, as a useful Science for Amateurs of the Art of Drawing and Painting. Like he says in the Introduction of the aforementioned book, regarding the advantage the Art Practice may gain from it, that it is desirable that all Painters and Drawings would apply themselves to this Science of Etching, so that we may have more beautiful Prints because of it, which we are now lacking.
